The
Mount Zion congregation was originally part of the
Mount Pleasant Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church, located
in Egypt, two miles north of Zephyr. In 1889, the
Mount Zion members decided to form their own congregation.
The
first service of the Mount Zion Church was on November
16, 1889. O.B. Snyder was the founding pastor and H. Cressman
was the assistant pastor. Initially the congregation
met in homes. Sometime in 1890, the exact date is
unknown, a building was erected on Lot 29, concession
6 East Gwillimbury (at the corner of what is now Kennedy
Road and Cole Road).
In
the 1920’s a shed was built for horses. This shed
was removed in 1966 to provide better parking for cars.
In
1947, the Church changed its name to reflect a new denomination
- the United Missionary Church. In 1969, the denomination
became known as the Missionary Church.

During
1978, members of the Mount Zion Church attended evening
services with the congregation of the newly formed Mount
Albert Church. When the Mount Albert congregation decided
to form a Sunday School and have morning services each
Sunday, the Mount Zion congregation voted to join them.
The last service was held in the Mount Zion Church on
December 31, 1978. The Mount Zion Church was sold
on May 1, 1980 and was converted to a residence.
The proceeds from the sale went into the building fund
for the Mount Albert Church.

The
first service in Mount Albert, an evening service,
was held on September 24, 1978 in the Community Centre.
It was led by the pastor, Rev. Bruce Clark. One
hundred and forty people attended the service. By
November, the congregation felt that it was time to begin
a Sunday School and Morning Service and decided to begin
these on the first Sunday of January 1979.
From
1979 until 1983, the congregation met in the Mount Albert
Community Centre and the Church of the Nazarene building
when the Community Centre wasn’t available.

During this time they looked for a possible building site,
developed a plan to build a church, developed a plan to
become an independent congregation separate from Mount
Pleasant, and raised money for the church building fund.
On
March 27th 1979 the District Conference
gave permission for Mount Albert and Mount Pleasant to
separate, effective July 1. Sunday March 25 was
the charter service for Mount Albert, with 33 persons
joining the Church as charter members. Rev. Bruce
Clark was the first full time pastor.

Many
sites were considered for the new church, but not
until 1982 did the right property become available – the
southeast corner of Albert Road and Don Rose Boulevard.
On November 24, 1982, the congregation voted unanimously
to proceed with the purchase of the property and to build
the church.
The
dedication service for the new Church was held on September
25, 1983, just five months after the sod was turned.
