Continuation School

1926 - 1948

As the number of students increased, the Centre Street School could no longer house everyone. A red, brick Continuation School was built on the north end of Alice Street and the senior students moved to it.

Elsie Crozier, a former student recalls, "The lunchroom was located in the room on the main floor to the right of the door, the east side.  The chemistry lab was located in the room on the west side of the main door.  Upstairs were two large classrooms with split classes.  One room was used for grade 9 and 10 and grades 11 and 12 were in the other room."

In 1948, rural High School Boards were eliminated and Mount Albert became part of the Newmarket High School Board.  The senior students were, and still are, bused to Newmarket for high school.

The Newmarket High School Board turned this building over to the Mount Albert Public School Board.  At a meeting on June 16, 1949, the town decided not to use it as a public school and this building was closed.

In 1950, Mr. W.H. Theaker bought the building and used it as a showroom for furniture.  He sold his furniture business in 1954, and sold this building at that time.  After that, it was used as a factory for making plastic trays.  The factory was shut down in the late 1970's.

The building was vacant for a few years and then was demolished in the 1980's when the houses were built at that end of Alice Street.
