Theaker's Store

19124 Centre Street

The Theaker store was in the building on the southwest corner of Centre Street and Main Street.

Ernest Brooks built this building in 1891 and operated a cabinet making and undertaking business in it.

In 1897, Allan Theaker sold his interest in the Woollen Mill to George Haigh and bought the furniture store and undertaking business from Ernest Brooks.  In 1909, his son W. H. Theaker, joined him in the business.  In 1911, Allan Theaker moved his business across the street and sold this building to Mr. John Rowland.

Mr. Rowland turned the building into a hardware store.  Later owners included Mrs. Wildfong, Horace Pearson and Walter Armstrong (1925-1930), Mr. William Thompson and, later, his son Stewart (1930-1963), Mr. Billinger (1963-1967) and Tom Rogers and Jim Jarvis (1967-1969).

In 1977, it was sold to Ged and Shirley Wheeler and became one of the Home Hardware chain of hardware stores.  Their daughter, Janet now runs the business.
