Pioneer Cemetery

Northeast Corner Centre Street & Mount Albert Road

The pioneer cemetery is located on the second lot north of Mount Albert Road on the east side of Centre Street.  This burial ground was just north of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.  Many of the early pioneers of the area were buried there.

In 1950, the Horticultural Society took on the project to clean up the site.  A plan was made of the graves.  Several of the old headstones from this cemetery and from the burial ground beside the South School across the street, were placed in cement wall at the back of the grounds.

At the time, many local residents were unsettled about disturbing the graves, but everyone has been pleased with the results.

In 1954, a monument was erected to honour the pioneers.

The Horticultural Society continues to care for the lawns and flowerbeds.
