Forrest Doctor's Office and Drug Store

19111 Centre Street

Dr. Robert Forrest originally built this building for his sons Dr. Jim and Dr. Barney Forrest.  Jim Forrest had his office in part of it, while Barney had a drug store in the back.  The first telephone in the village was installed in the doctor’s office around 1898.

At one point, Dr. Cody operated a medical practice from this building.  Dr. Mills took over when Cr. Cody retired.

For a time the building was a private home owned by Charles Davidson.  Mr. Davidson operated an insurance business from the premises.

Later Thomas Moorehead bought it and lived in it until his death in 1957.

Alex Cooper purchased the building in 1957 and remodeled it into a rest home.  In 1974 the rest home was closed and the residents were taken to Newmarket.  In 1975, it was reopened as a nursing home and became part of York Manor.  It then changed to Braeside Nursing Home and after that became a centre for trouble youths.

In 2006, sisters Ellen Stavros and Joanne Chapman, purchased the home and are now in the process of restoring it to its original glory. The name has been changed to Mount Albert Manor in honour of the Town. Mount Albert Manor will soon be offering rooms for accommodation and special events. Specialty foods are also offered.
