Sovereign Bank Building

19139 Centre Street

The Sovereign Bank building is on the southeast corner of Bank Street and Centre Street.  This was once the site of an implement shop owned by the Misses Leek and operated by William Hunter and later by Edgar Mainprize.

Minnie and Elizabeth Leek had the current building built for the Sovereign Bank.  In 1907, the Sovereign Bank was doing a good business in the area and added an additional staff member, bringing the total staff count to 5 people.  Unfortunately, the Bank failed the following year.

After the Sovereign Bank failed in 1908, the building was taken over by the newly formed Toronto Dominion Bank.  This bank was the result of the merger of the Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank.  The TD Bank operated out of this building until 1966.

In 1966, the TD Bank moved to its current location at the northwest corner of Main Street and Centre Street.  In 1974, Mr. Price bought the old bank building and opened a general store in it.

For some time there has been a dwelling in the south portion and Campbell Insurance in the north portion of the building.
