Ross Store

19157 Centre Street

The Ross store was in the building just south of the drug store on the east side of Centre Street.

Robert Rowland first owned this building.  For some time, Messrs. McDonald and Sloane operated it as a general store.  In 1889, the post office was located here.

Harry Ross bought the building in 1890 and rented it to Steeper and Dunn for their dry good business and grocery business.  In 1913, Harry Ross took over the building himself and operated a general store and post office.

In the early 1930’s, Kenneth, his son, took over the store, assisted by Howard and Bill Morton.

In 1947, William McQuaid purchased the building.  He sold it to Mr. Hicks in 1954.  In 1960 it was sold to Mr. Chichelly who operated it as one of the Red and White chain of grocery stores.

In 1974, it was purchased by Surgit Gill who operated it as one of the IGA chain of grocery stores.  This store closed in June 1999 when the new IGA store opened on Highway 48.

In 2000, the building was modified so that it could house two smaller businesses on the main floor.  Currently the south side is available to rent and the north side is the home of the Ryudo Kan Judo Club.
