Centre Street Mill

19185 Centre Street

This mill was located in the building just south of the creek on the east side of Centre Street, close to the road.  Mr. Bowman built the first mill on this property in the mid-1850’s.  The mill was run by power generated from the pond created in the creek just east of the building.  Sometime later the mill burned down.

In 1870, Alland Graham built a woollen mill on the site.  Farmers from miles around brought their wool to the mill to be made into blankets.  At that time, the mill extended south almost as far as the present post office.

Later George Haigh bought it from Mr. Graham.  His sons, Corbett and Edward worked in the mill and Emma Mainprize was in charge of the office.

In 1888, Allan Theaker became a partner in the business, but Mr. Haigh bought him out in 1897.

In 1911, Ben Ross bought it for a planning mill but sold it sometime later to his brother Harry Ross.

Charles Scott bought it and then sold it to Mr. McLaren who used it as a shop to repair motors.

During the 1930’s it was a skating rink and recreation centre run by Howard Morton, Donald Rose and George Allison.  In 1959 it was taken over by the United Valve Repair Industries and used as a shop to repair valves.

At some point the building was renovated to have living quarters upstairs, with a shop in the lower level and a shop in the side office.

Around 1985, the building was purchased by Alex German.  He converted the living quarters upstairs into three apartments.

Over the years, several businesses have been located in the offices.  Around 1986, Al Dorman's Insurance moved into the side office and still carries on business there today.  Currently Fellini’s Fine Wine is located in the lower level.  Deborah Lankin-Widmeyer opened this brew-on-the-premises wine-making operation in October 1999.
